Hi,
I'm going to be in Hanoi in six months, and was wondering what the regulations were in bringing in a personal car/vehicle. Has anyone done that?
Thanks!

Embassy staff and large INGOs bring in cars and they know the rules and regs. You may want to check with them. There are often cars for sale as expats leave in the summer for new posts.

If you're only here 6 months I wouldn't really recommend driving here. It takes about that long to just get used to the traffic. I'm expect that renting a car and driver for that period would be cheaper anyway.

I will be in Hanoi at the end of the year for a long term assignment, not six months. I will definitely keep an eye out for used cars to purchase in Vietnam if importing is out of the question. Thanks for the help!
Another group to ask are the moving companies. Check the web for their names. Also chambers of commerce have good info about this. As far as hiring a driver with car - that's doable. There are a few for hire. Your company probably has all the info anyhow.

I did some research on this and it turns out, the tax on imported cars exceeds 100% .. I was going to bring my 06 Jetta and was devastated to learn that I had to sell it :( If you're car falls under a 1 liter engine, than taxes are lower, but up until reading this I didn't know these cars even existed.
I got this from a moving company in NY: I am checking on the cost to move your automobile into Hanoi. In the meantime below find some customs information about the entry of an automobile. * All autos must be new (less than 100 km) and left hand drive. * Motor vehicles for diplomatic/international licenses can be imported duty free. All others are subject to 150 % duty. (The value as assessed by customs officials.) * Import permit is required * Certificate of registration * Car papers ----- When I get into town, I will definitely ask around. I think the cost is going to be too high.
